Responsibilities:

• Ensuring all activities are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
• Applying your technical expertise and experience to ensure the final product meets Australian quality standards.
• Identifying opportunities for improved production techniques and liaising with workshop supervisors to promote improvements.
• Coaching and mentoring other staff including apprentices in the application of enhanced work techniques and trade skills to ensure greater productivity.
• Performing preventative and predictive maintenance on machinery to ensure efficient operation of our equipment.
• Troubleshooting and repairs to company equipment in line with manufacturers standards.
• Promoting a team working environment in line with Austin Core Values.

About You

The successful applicant will possess the following skills and experience:

• Minimum Cert III Trade Qualification in Fitting and Machining (essential)
• Minimum 1 year’s post-trade experience in complex computerized Machining Techniques would be advantageous.
• Extensive knowledge of capacity and capability with Lathe, Milling (both horizontal and vertical), Borers (both horizontal and vertical) and multi-tasking machines would be an advantage.
• Extensive knowledge in programming and operating Fanuc and or Mazak CNC controllers would be an advantage.
• Enhanced mechanical analytical and troubleshooting skills
• Previous industry experience in heavy steel manufacturing industry.
• Will have unrestricted working rights in Australia.

About you

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

• Trade Qualification – Certificate III in Engineering – Fitting & Machining Trade
• Minimum 5 years of industry experience
• Valid Australian drivers’ licence
• Well-developed People and leadership skills
• Ability to negotiate, influence and implement change
• Be able to work within a team environment, yet also able to work autonomously
• High Risk Licence in Dogging and Rigging will be highly regarded

To be successful you will require: 

We have an exciting permanent full-time employment opportunity for an experienced Workshop Leading Hand  at our manufacturing facility in Mackay, QLD.

• Trade qualified (Cert III in Engineering – Boilermaker)
• Previous experience as a Leading Hand with proven leadership skills is preferred but not essential
• Minimum 5 years experience in heavy fabrication and heavy repair in mining or manufacturing industry
• Experience in FCAW and ability to pass a 4G weld test to AS2980 standard, UT and visual
• A keen eye for detail, a strong commitment to quality and pride in your work
• An active and responsible approach to safety
• Good organisational and time management skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Experience using Microsoft software packages
• Be able to pass a medical which includes drug and alcohol testing

• 2+ years previous warehousing experience with ERP
• Intermediate computer literacy skills with proficiency in MS Office suite

• Other tickets such as scaffolding, gantry crane, EWP would be highly regarded

Duties will include:

• Picking stock and work in progress orders and processing through computer system
• Issue of consumable items
• Preparation of goods ready for dispatch by day staff
• Management of small tooling issues and returns
• Periodic stock takes
• Maintenance of warehouse to a high standard
• Maintenance of stock security and integrity
• General warehouse management including loading and unloading vehicles, stocktake, tool issue, material preparation and dispatch

• Utilize advanced 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks or Creo to create detailed designs, simulations, and prototypes, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and industry standards.
• Apply expertise in bucket and tray design capacity calculations, conducting thorough analyses to validate design integrity and optimize performance.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including sales, operations, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless project execution and delivery, coordinating with offshore teams as necessary.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department, identifying opportunities for process optimization, efficiency gains, and cost reduction, leveraging insights from both onshore and offshore teams.
• Act as a technical resource and subject matter expert in design principles, material selection, and engineering best practices, providing guidance and support to team members, including offshore team members.
• Lead by example in fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the engineering team, promoting knowledge sharing and professional development across onshore and offshore teams.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively, ensuring that deliverables are completed on schedule and within budget constraints, while effectively coordinating with offshore team members to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape, leveraging insights to inform strategic decision-making and business growth, and ensuring that onshore and offshore teams are aligned with company objectives.
• Lead cross-functional collaboration and drive a “One Austin” culture and mindset.
• Create and foster a customer service culture cross functionally so that all stakeholders and functions collaborate to be responsive, outcome focused and adding value across the group.
• Work closely with the Engineering Manager on sales initiatives, targets and plans.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field is required
• Minimum 8+ years of experience in engineering roles
• Proficiency in 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks or Creo is essential.
• Heavy Metal Fabrication Design Experience is essential.
• Expertise in bucket and tray design capacity calculations is highly desirable.
• Practical workshop experience is highly valued, demonstrating hands-on expertise and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
• Shop floor experience as a fitter or boilermaker turned-design-engineer is an added advantage, offering practical insight into manufacturing processes and enhancing technical problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of contemporary trends and issues within the mining industry.
• Substantial Knowledge of Quality and Engineering standards applicable to Austin Engineering’s operations.
• Superior computer modelling skills, utilizing contemporary engineering design packages & releasing using Windchill.
• Ability to inspire innovative engineering and product design to meet client needs and enhance ANG’s market share and profitability.
• Strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.

• Collaborate with the Global Engineering Department to create and revise product designs and detailed technical drawings for various engineering projects.
• Utilize industry-standard design software including SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Inventor to develop accurate 2D and 3D models.
• Ensure designs meet customer specifications, considering the functional, structural, and operational requirements while adhering to industry and company standards.
• Translate concepts into precise technical drawings by working closely with engineering teams and project managers, ensuring clarity and accuracy for manufacturing and production teams.
• Revise and update drawings as required, following feedback from engineering teams, client reviews, and change orders.
• Support the development of new products and modifications of existing designs, ensuring product consistency and quality.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

• A minimum of a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
• With at least 5 years of relevant experience in the related discipline is required

• Proficient in English is essential
• Strong understanding of engineering design principles and manufacturing processes.
